Abstract

Depression is a highly prevalent problem which has a strong global impact on psychosocial functioning. To prevent depressive disorders and their effects we developed an universal school-based cognitive-behavioural primary prevention-program that follows the multifactioral model of depression and consists of a cognitive and a social training: The cognitive training aims to raise awareness of dysfunctional thoughts and change them; the social training is apt for training assertiveness and contact behaviour. It was expected that directly after the program no significant positive effects on the depressive symptoms would be observed, while lower dysfunctional thoughts and an increased social support were already expected to be observable. Preliminary evaluation results (training group n = 187; control group n = 151) show neither significant effects on the depressive symptoms nor on the automatic thoughts. However, there are gender-specific effects within the social networks of the adolescents: female youths report increased frequent reliance on social support, while male youths report a greater social network.
