Abstract
Prologue: The books on language pedagogy and German-speaking literature that filled the tall shelf in my apartment were waterlogged and falling apart. Amidst the ruin of my flooded home, the disintegrating texts I held in my hands formed both the reality of my life and served as a metaphor for the many challenges that appeared for me during my last year of graduate school.
