Abstract

Bridging Gaps, Building Futures: Comprehensive Family and Community Engagement Strategies for Empowering Black Youth (Ages 13-17)

Heather Lynn Savage

March 27th, 2025

This study examined family and community engagement strategies that were designed to influence the educational outcomes, mental health, and social behaviors of Black youth (ages 13- 17) in Indianapolis, Indiana. Addressing gaps in research, it explored barriers to engagement and the culturally responsive approaches that strengthened school, family, and community partnerships. Data was collected through focus groups and demographic surveys, providing qualitative insights into the challenges and supports that shaped engagement. Findings from 27 participants (18 youth and 9 parents) revealed that trust in institutions, culturally relevant programming, and access to mental health and social support services were key facilitators of engagement. However, logistical barriers, including transportation, scheduling conflicts, and parental work obligations often hindered sustained involvement. Parents emphasized the need for stronger school-community partnerships, improved communication from schools, and more inclusive engagement strategies that reflected Black families’ experiences. This study provided practical recommendations for strengthening school-community collaboration, increasing youth participation in enrichment programs, and addressing systemic inequities. Rather than assessing long-term outcomes, it highlighted immediate factors that influenced engagement and proposed strategies to foster sustainable opportunities for Black youth and their families.
