Abstract
For as long as there has been a CSS there has been more or less dissatisfaction with the treatment of family assets. The argument has not been over the use of assets to offset educational costs, but over standards, formulae, and procedures to derive either a "fair" share for the student, or a fair measure of parental ability to pay from assets. For some time now there has also been controversy over the place of student assets in determining family ability to provide a contribution based on assets. This latter issue will be dealt with further on in this paper.
